about the smooth guide to Cambridge

Most visitors to Cambridge stay only a couple of days or so - if you're one of them, you'll need concise information about how to fit the most into your trip, and some advice about the best places to see.
If you're on a business trip you may want to do some shopping, or fit a little sightseeing into your trip. You may not want to spend time looking for a restaurant in a strange town, or chase around searching for a foreign exchange bureau.

We will be building up a database of information covering all your travel, accommodation and entertainment needs. We will be offering restaurant and venue revues, an entertainment guide, advance information about events, shopping and leisure services, and a whole collection of articles about what's going on in and around Cambridge. We will also be adding foreign language versions of our pages.
In conjunction with this, we are developing a way that you can 'create' and download a customised web page for you to print or download and browse at your leasure, covering the dates you intend to stay.

Keep watching this space !

Hints and tips about travelling around in Cambridge

Driving or Cycling in Cambridge

Driving in Cambridge (just like any other town or City) can be at least a little concerning ... especially when you do not know the route that well. Below is a list of pointers that I hope will help

  • Strange though it may seem ... we drive and ride on the LEFT.
  • Plan your journey first.
  • It may be as well to take your driving licence with you, or at least your passport.
  • In town, our maximum speed limit is 30 miles per hour (around 45 Kph). Do not exceed this even if you get the chance.
  • When cycling, keep to the left and use the cycle lanes where provided
  • When driving, make sure you know your journey before you set off. If you get lost or concerned, pull into a side road before checking your map or directions.
  • Safety / Security in Cambridge

Cambridge is a beautiful, peaceful city - but it is a city and with it comes the inevitable, occasional, avoidable incident.
    So ...

  • Leave any valuables you do not need for your journey at your hotel or hostel
  • Any valuables you do need to take, keep them close to you
  • Try not to keep credit cards and cheque books in the same bag / purse or pocket
  • Keep bags with you if you can
  • Emergency Service phone numbers to note:

Pick up a phone and dial the following ...

    Service
    Phone
    Number
    Minumum
    Cost
    Police / Fire / Ambulance
    999
    FREE
    Addenbrokes Hospital
    (01223)
    20p
    Cambridge Police station
    (01223)

(These should be readily available at your place of residence, or in phone boxes)
